With a population of 863,728 residents as of the 2020 Census, Essex County is the second-most populous county in the state of New Jersey. Being one of the most centrally located counties in the New York metropolitan area, it comes as no surprise that the cost of living is comparably higher than other counties in New Jersey. As of 2015, the per capita income of Essex County residents was $60,030, ranked as the 153rd highest amongst the 3113 counties in the United States.

It is hence not surprising that plenty of upscale cities can be found in Essex County. Read on to learn more about some of the upscale Essex County cities.

Essex Fells

Known for its quiet nature, residents of Essex Fells enjoy peaceful and tranquil living away from the noise of the city. Most of the homes here are custom-built and set amongst green spaces, making it an ideal place for nature lovers to live in.

Featuring mostly communities of older homes, Essex Fells is known to have a lack of stores.  Despite so, residents living at the edge of the city still enjoy easy access to shopping and dining spots such as the Caldwell Seafood Market & Café as well as Fairchild’s Marketplace.

Short Hills

Short Hills is a community that is unincorporated into the town of Millburn, so it is essentially a part of a larger township. What sets Short Hills apart from other areas of Milburn is the large concentration of luxury estates that can be found there. The prices of most homes at Short Hills go in the millions and consist of multiple levels. Here, residents also enjoy easy access to dining hotspots such as the Boxcar Bar and California the Pizza Kitchen. Short Hills also houses a mall which many consider to be the best one in the whole of New Jersey.

Livingston

While Livingston initially started out as a lumbering and farming community, it has evolved tremendously over the years to what it is today, a scene for diverse performing arts just an hour’s drive away from New York.

Here, most communities feature residences of small bedrooms, making it ideal for workers that commute to the surrounding cities. Residents get to enjoy easy access to plenty of dining and shopping spots thanks to the Livingston Shopping Center. Apart from that, areas like Becker Park are also nearby as a venue for outdoor recreational activities.

Fairfield

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city lies Fairfield, an area that offers a unique rural feel not found elsewhere in the county. Despite so, Fairfield still offers its residents easy access to multiple highways, making a commute to areas like New York City easy.

One of the favorite hotspots here is the Great Piece Meadows Preserve, where the public can go to enjoy hiking and fishing activities.
