The numerous uncovered gems spread all over the state make it the perfect place for families to enjoy their holidays. From historic homes and classy little towns to museums and historic parks, visiting the Garden State promises to be nothing short of an adventure.

Hidden Gems

Here are some of the best hidden gems in New Jersey:

  • Sterling Hill Mining Museum

Located in Ogdensburg, Sterling Hill is a former zinc mine best known for having the largest number of fluorescent mineral species densely compact in a small cavern. Back in its prime, the mine produced over 11 million tons of zinc ore before it was closed in 1986.  Guests are advised to dress warmly during the tour since the temperature inside the mine remains a constant 56 degrees.  One notable merit of touring the site is that you get to carry fluorescent rock back with you. Considering that these rocks are some of the brightest in the world, this is quite a treat!

  • The United States Golf Association Museum

Formally opened in 2008, this 16,000 square foot, Arnold Palmer Center for Golf History commemorates every USGA champion in its hall of fame. The magnificent museum is located in a Georgian Revival mansion built back in 1919 by the same man who designed the Jefferson Memorial and the National Archives – John Russell Pope. It contains several golf-related artifacts such as antique golf balls as well as the famous putter used by former President Taft. Additionally, it is a landmark that is remembered for showcasing the rivalry between Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

  • The Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey

The Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey holds historic space and air equipment such as the world’s first hovercraft and a piece of the Hindenburg. The museum showcases New Jersey’s involvement in the exploration of space and advancement in air travel. It also celebrates the contributions of New Jersey residents as pioneers in the aviation sector like; Buzz Aldrin who was the second man to ever walk on the moon, Malcom Forbes who was a skilled balloonist and Anne Morrow Lindberg who was the first American woman to acquire a first class gilder pilot’s license.

  • Diggerland USA

This 14-acre construction-themed adventure park was first opened in June 2014. It features construction themed rides that will make you scream your lungs out as well as modified construction vehicles that are accessible to both children and adults for their enjoyment. “Diggerfest” –an event scheduled every weekend of October- treats visitors to mazes, costume contests, hay rides and modified stunt shows.

  • Lambertville

Lambertville is regarded as the most beautiful city in USA.  Its strategic location on the banks of the Delaware River makes this fact hard to reject. The small town is filled with restaurants such as the Hamilton’s Grill Room and the nautical themed Boathouse Bar, antique shops and a number of galleries. Additionally, the Shad festival that marks the migration of the shad fish adds on to the town’s spark. Definitely a food lover’s dream destination!
